For any B-Ball fans who caught the game, what did you think of the first showing of the results of The ProcessTM?

I thought the team played well overall. Fultz looked comfortable on the court. JJ really seems to fit and play his role well. Simmons moves much more naturally to the basket than I originally thought he would. A promising look at a young (new?) team against a playoff tested team with a great PG. I was very encouraged.

And before you say it, I know it was one game in a loooooong season. The Flyers seem like they are trending up. The Eagles are playing great. There's a baseball team somewhere. It feels good to be a Philly fan right now.

I watched a full basketball game for the first time in many years. I was pretty happy with the effort yesterday, especially given how little playing most of those guys have.

I thought Simmons looked like an absolute monster. If he develops even a semblance of a mid-long term jumper, he will be virtually unstoppable. Fultz looked okay, especially for a 19 year old who hasn't played much recently. That fucking free throw form is brutal though.

RoCo was excellent, Embiid was his usual beastly self, but I thought he pressed a bit late in the game to make plays.

Overall, it was was a solid start on the road against one of the top teams in the conference. A lot to be excited about.
Joegrane
Do you think they will be able to defend opposing PGs? Did they always have a PG or combo G on the court to defend the opposing PG?

We also have a Top 10 college basketball team.

I though they looked ok. About what I expected.

Simmons is a talent, but between his and Fultz’s unwillingness to even attempt a shot from outside of 6’ is concerning.

Fultz looked lost on offense. Without the ball, he just drifted around the perimeter and the team looked to be playing 4 vs. 5. He looked better with the ball, but too often dribbled into trouble (again, refusing to even attempt a jumper) and lost the ball. He had the ball stolen or rejected at the rim at least 6 times. Defensively, he was good helping off his man, but his on ball d was terrible.

RoCo and JJ were amazing. Hard working on defense and shooting lights out. Bayless was solid although not quite as impressive as the other 2.

Embiid looked to be laboring a bit. Not as quick as we’re used to. Not as vertically explosive as we’re used to. But nonetheless, he was the best Sixer on the floor, and I was pleasantly surprised at his 26 min run as it pertains to his proposed mins restrictions.

Saric looked like Dario. His shot wasn’t falling, but his overall floor game was good.

There were no backup bigs outside of Amir who at 6’9” is only a fraction of what Joel and Richaun are as rim protectors. We can’t let Marcin go for 20+ and 17 boards. That’s not going to get it done.

They put up 115 points. The defense has to get MUCH better to compete, but the offensive output is a plus.

It’s going to take some time to figure out rotations, pairings, and the general formula. I was surprised (pleasantly) to see DNPCDs from Sauce, Jah, and Andersen.

I’ll grade them a B+ overall. A good start that supports the optimism, but also portends of the early struggles we can expect.

Good analysis. Overall I was disappointed with Fultz, but also trying to be realistic given his age, experience, and the fact that he's been banged up and hasn't played much lately. He definitely looked overwhelmed.

What I can’t figure out is WTF happened to his J.

His shot last season was butter. He shot in the 3 summer league games in which he participated was butter. He suffers a minor ankle sprain, and suddenly looks like he’s never shot a ball in his fucking life. I don’t trust the regime to tell us the truth about injuries. Is this about the shoulder? Is it about him wanting to improve his free throw (where he shot 69% in college)? They allude to the fact that the team didn’t ask him to change anything. Is it his personal coach that developed him through his youth? Is it him? I’m very concerned about this kid. The age thing is a poor excuse to hang our hats on. Most rookies are 19 now. Have been for years. The list of other #1 overall picks who started their careers coming off the bench includes literally nothing but card carrying busts. Fingers crossed, but I’m not so sure we didn’t get fleeced into taking a potential head case. You don’t go on your own volition and mess with a shooting form that carried you to the #1 overall draft selection. It’s fucking lunacy.

I'm a bit worried too after watching him last night. He definitely didn't look comfortable on the floor.

He was a late bloomer, so it's possible he just doesn't feel comfortable yet. Especially after being off the court due to the injury stuff.

The shooting form situation is weird as fuck though. I'll give him 20 games before forming any really strong opinions though.

19 is still fucking 19. There isn't a long list of 19 year old guards that have come in and torn up the league.
nephillymike
I was much happier with Reddicks "I don't like to take positives out of a loss" comment than a Brett Browns apologist happy we were close mantra.

Time for excuses is over. Even if a Brown doesn't fully believe it, he has to set the bar high.

Was happy that Embiid and Brown sucked it up and had him play more than originally discussed. Wasn't happy he decided to do his best JJ Reddick impersonation instead of helping out under neath.

It was a shame that we had those two late game turnovers that cost us. Without them, I think we win it.

Overall, very unrealistic to expect a win in the opener at WAS. From that standpoint, we are on track and played a better game than expected this early in the season. There were some things we can build on.
D Rock
The schedule is brutal through the first 3rd of the season. I fully expect them to put the bandwagon jumpers on notice by Thanksgiving. Folks will be calling for Brown’s head and jumping off the wagons like rats off a sinking ship.

In the end, we’ll make the playoffs, and exceed the expectations of the pre-season consensus.
nephillymike
They shit the bed tonight.

Embiid and Saric think they're 3pt specialists.

Embiid needs to get his act together and Brown needs to explain his role.

Disappointing.

0-2.

Embiid not playing at TOR in next game.
D Rock
Ok. So apparently folks are falling off the bandwagon after TWO games. Here I thought they’d stay on until November. Who knew?

Not falling off any bandwagon.

Just criticizing stupid basketball and a lack of hustle.

Embiid after the game said they need to get him the ball down low. Inadvertently throwing someone under the bus (teammates, coach)

Well, he needs to hustle and go down low to get the ball down low instead of being two seconds behind the ball every possession and playing lazy big man basketball and hanging out at the three point line.

Not sure what's up with Dario. He doubled down on bad three point shots over and over.

Maybe they'll play better tonight.

Sabathia vs. Morton tonight. Numbers aren't looking good for the Astros to take this one. Hopefully they pull something out of their ass so I don't have to root for the fucking Dodgers to win the World Series.

I gave my thoughts after the first game. To summarize - most of these guys have very limited nba experience. Simmons and Embiid are freaks. Fultz looks bad but most 19 year old guards do. I’m worried about him, but expect him to get better with health and experience.

But Simmons is going to be an absolute star. He’s now played 4 NBA games. Relax.

My beef was not with Simmons or Fultz, but with Brown and Embiid. To allow Embiid to play that way is ill-advised

You wanted Gus Bradley as a coach, ya twat. You think Chuck Pagano and Mike McCarthy are good at their jobs.

I said, regarding Geno (and Hack) that I would much rather be wrong about a QB and miss on guy I drafted than miss out on the next Aaron Rodgers.

You think the Browns aren’t regretting passing on Wentz (and now Watson)? There is virtually no harm in being wrong about a QB as long as it doesn’t prohibit you from getting the right guy when he comes along.

The Browns will never recover from this Wentz blunder. At least for the next 10-15 years.

But of course you’re too much of a dipsbit to see the difference.

And guess who was basically the only guy around here who wanted Doug as our HC?

Imagine it taking a few games for a team with 2 new starters in the starting group to figure out defensive rotations.

Welp . . . they finally figured it out.

Damn, that was a fun game last night. To watch the birds dismantle the hated foreskins and follow it up with a triple double from Simmons and a 30 point night from Joel, is simply a great way to spend an evening.

It’s ok, Mikey. We’ll always leave a spot for you on The Process Wagon.

Sixers with a heartbreaker buzzer beating loss.

They snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Nice to see that Embiid and Brown finally decided that he should play down low.

He is still too slow to kick it out when doubled. He had a lot of costly turnovers.

On another note, TJ was awesome tonight. Great D, excellent PG play and he made the team better when out there.

Dario looks lost. He has no role and is struggling. Hopefully it comes around.

They should have had that one. They should be kicking themselves after that one. Hopefully Brown looks in the mirror after this one. RC taking a late three with no one underneath when we should have been taking our time. That cost us the game. Brown has got to kick some ass. As a coach of over 10 years, the stupidity of that is baffling.

I taped the DET game I need to watch that one.

No. What cost us the game was not RoCo’s ill advised 3 from the corner. It was Brett Brown’s in-ability to scheme up a look in crunch time.

We’re up 104 - 96 with 3 mins left. I said to my son “first team to 105 wins” not joking in the least. We spent our next 4 offensive possessions watching Ben walk the ball up the court (including one where he had the ball ahead of traffic and pulled back rather than attack) and try to ISO from the top. It’s the hoops equivalent of going into a prevent defense. You’ve pushed the ball all night, you’ve moved the ball all night into open looks. Now at crunch time, suddenly it’s 1992 and I’m being forced to watch Charles Barkley back his big ass down to the low block for 15 seconds every possession?

As I saw it, that loss was 100% on Brown. Totally unimaginative offensive scheme.

Other things of note...

Simmons lack of a J will ramp up the time it’s going to take for teams to figure out how to defend him. He’s too 1 dimensional.

Part of Joel’s conditioning issues seems to be a significant loss of strength in the lower body. I’m guessing that’s why he’s been so hesitant to even go to the low block. He couldn’t get any push against Capela at all, despite outweighing him by 50 lbs.. Until he gets his legs back, he looks more like a stretch 5 that can defend. But his low post game is no where near where it was before the meniscus.

Hey Brett: Ya think you might wanna set some variety of off-ball screens to get Redick open? Huh? It’s as if he’s never seen JJ play prior to his arrival. He represents EASY, INSTANT offense. He’s having to create WAY too many of his own looks off the bounce.

RoCo is having a fantastic start to his season.

Amir Johnson, not so much.

We went long stretches with Johnson, RoCo, Anderson, JJ, TJ on the floor and they couldn’t buy a bucket. (See note to Brett on how to utilize JJ above). Why not some run for Sauce, or Korkmaz, or Jah in those moments? He just gave the entirety of Fultz’s mins to Anderson and wiped his hands. Again, where’s the creativity? Coaching cop-out if you ask me.

I love Brett Brown. He truly kept a team together that was undertalented and could have imploded year after year through the losing. His player development with guys like RoCo, TJ, Holmes and more is nothing short of special. But now it’s time to coach a legit NBA team, and night’s like last night will only serve to shine a BRIGHT light on these late game failures. Last night was on BB.
