Is Blount a lock to make this team?

I say probable yes, but not a certainty.

Would not be a complete shocker if he gets cut.

For Merrill to ask it, many must have their doubts.

As much as Wentz and Peters are. He hasn't looked good, but nobody in their right mind should care at this point. He scored 18 TD's last year.

The only way is if they trade for Shady and I don't think that is happening. They'd probably need cap space to do it and they don't have a high enough draft pick to make it happen.

For Merrill to mention it on air, there must be a lot of people talking about it.

I've heard many reporters say he's looked real slow in camp. Not one good report have I heard.

I would have thought nothing of it. But the big M mentioned it, so ai give it some credence as a possibility.

Just sayin'.

I'd lean towards Blount making it, because no-one else has stepped up as the #1 back. It would be a possibility if Smallwood was healthy or Clement excelling whilst Blount struggled.

I'm more concerned that our OL hasn't played well in either game which affects the run game. Let's hope that the starting OL plays a full half together on Thursday and shows the quality that they have on paper.

What we don't know in all of this, and what could be very relevant, is what Pederson is doing. How is he evolving as a HC and what's he trying to accomplish with these preseason games?

Why did he tell LJ that whenever JP had a day off and wasn't practicing that he'd be working at LT and then put Big V or Gordon there ... then put LJ in the game at LT with only one walk through to get acclimated? Why is he using Warmack at RG instead of Wiz? Why is he running a hammer RB on sweeps that are normally designed for speedier, shiftier RBs with a makeshift OL? Why is Tobin playing at RT when he's proven to be much more reliable at LT? And at either spot he's not inspiring.

Is Pederson using preseason the way a pitcher uses exhibition games? Focus on improving or evaluating certain things no matter what the situation because it's practice, not a real game? Or, is Pederson over his head as a HC, did we misjudge the strength of the OL or is Blount done?

A smart team would definitely be heavily weighing this decision. What are the financial ramifications either way?

At the very least, if they continue trying to use him as an outside the tackles runner, the whole staff should be escorted out of town.

It was a great idea to surprise Lane- Injuries aren't scheduled. if JP gets injured during a game do they move Lane immediatly or give him a week to prepare.

the types of situations described Keep guys humble and hopefully hungry to grow. Preseason is the time to experiment.

Blount's job is to pick up short yardage and be a threat at the goal line. Maybe Pederson wanted to see how much gas he had left running outside - if he isn't over his head, he'll see that isn't how to use Blount. I didn't see the Bills game but I checked the play-by-play and it looked like his carries up the middle (all 2 of them) went for 11 yards.

In a bit of irony over the last 3 seasons Blount ranks 10th out of 59 RBs running to the outside at 4.92 yds.

Have to love those fun facts.

I heard that on their radio show Saturday. Unexpected.

Not sure if this year's version of slow Blount will be successful.

Let's hope so.

I believe both Gronk and Bennett are considered to be high quality blockers. That's dramatically different than having Ertz setting the edge.

I don't think he is any slower or different this year. Big guys look slower by virtue of size. Hard to say with the terrible blocking they have shown so far. Time will tell.

That doesn't really surprise me actually. It's also way too early to determine how much of a step he's lost, if any. I didn't see the 2nd game, but after watching two of those three clips in your link, Barry Sanders would've had trouble gaining yardage with that terrible blocking.
