Full Version: Feeling a little better about Wentz

I did some research into how the QBs in today's NFL did in their 1st year, relative to others.

For those who played at least 7 games their 1st year, with year, rank in passer rating among those with enough attempts to qualify and passer rating

Name...........Rookie Yr......Rank.......Rating
Prescott..........2016..........3.............104.9
Wilson............2012..........4.............100.0
Roethlisberger..2004..........5..............98.1
Ryan...............2008.........11.............87.7
Newton............2011........15..............84.5
Mariotta...........2015........17..............91.5
Dalton..............2011........20.............80.4
Flacco...............2008........22.............80.3
Palmer..............2004........23..............77.3
Wentz...............2016........25.............79.3
Bradford............2010........25.............76.5
Luck.................2012........26..............76.5
Tannehill...........2012........27..............76.1
Winston............2015........28..............84.2
Stafford............2009........29..............61.0
Carr..................2014........30..............76.6
Bortles..............2014........33..............69.5
E. Manning........2004.........34..............55.4
Smith................2005........35..............40.8
=============================
For current QBs who didn't start much rookie year (yr # they started)
Cousins.............2015(yr 4)..5th............101.6
Brady................2001(yr2)..6th.............86.5
Rodgers............2008(yr 4)..6th.............93.8
Kaepernick.........2012(yr2)..7th.............98.3
Rivers................2016(yr3)..8th.............92.0
Taylor.................2015(yr5)..8th.............99.4
Brees.................2002(yr2)..24th............76.9

So, Wentz, as 10th in passer rating ranking among pure rookie years among current NFL QBs out of 19 isn't bad. There are plenty of successful QBs who have started out worse.

Maybe the Kid will be OK.

McNabb made huge progress from year one to year two.

I expect Wentz may take a huge leap in year 2, considering he got probably 3 times the on field experience as 5 did. I do believe he had more pass attempts as any rookie ever. He may have made a lot of mistakes, but now has a wealth of film to ID and correct his game. There is also the fact he has a full off season and TC with him as the starter, he was the backup until a week before last season started. All the kid needs are a couple of targets that can catch reliably and if the rapport between Wentz and Ertz continues to build he may already have one of them. Depending on the moves they make in the off season, I think they should be a better team next year with Wentz leading the way.

Where's DMac on the list?

I wonder how those rankings line up with experience before the NFL. That's one of the wild cards for me with Wentz. He may never be more than we saw this year, but the fact that he had only started something like 23 football games (2 seasons?) as a QB before being drafted and performing the way he did is incredible. Especially considering that he hardly played in the preseason. 23 games ever before starting an NFL game and he is ranked 10th on that list. I only hope rushing him in doesn't leave him scarred with bad habits.

34th.

Behind # 33 who at 62.9 was none other than ......

Doug Pederson

Unless DJax signs here I don't expect a big leap in year two. However if they get one decent WR and the O Line holds up he should have a solid year.

Wow. And some talk about him in the HOF. It's a shame players aren't allowed to work out with coaches during the off season, he's a guy who could benefit from it. Then, if his coaches talk to a third-party QB whisperer and Wentz works with him ...

Reports about Matthews and Ertz hanging with Wentz this spring to bond and catch some passes is good, but what about Agholor and DGB? And shouldn't those guys be looking into a receiver's camp?

I thought I heard that Wentz was going to work with Tom House the ex MLB pitcher who works with QB's.

I thought Matthews was more just hanging out with Wentz as opposed to detailed training.

Agholar may mess Wentz up!! Like when I was a pitcher growing up and throwing to a catcher who couldn't catch a curve ball...........a waste of time!

A slurve, actually. Started behind the batters head and ended on the low outside corner!
