Full Version: Where's the depth in this draft?

I know I normally have a tendency to focus on the first two rounds, but there's frequently very good players in the third and fourth and sometimes good players can be found later. Anybody remember Clyde Simmons and Seth Joyner?

We keep hearing how deep the WRs are in this draft. Is there starter quality in the third or fourth rounds? Players who can really help the offense? How about pass rushers? DBs?

Anyone know?

Copied from a post I made a while ago:

Mayock does a good job for NFL.com of rating the players as to how he projects them to do in the NFL.

Years are different. One year can have many players projected to be starters vs. another with a top heavy few but no depth.

GM's look at the ratings more than the rank when deciding how to approach the draft, trades downs and ups and free agency.

The top five categories of grades for Mayock this year are:

1. Future All Pro
2. Pro Bowl Caliber
3. Chance to Become a Pro Bowler
4. Should Become and Instant Starter
5. Chance to Become a Starter

Here is the total breakdown by category:

Future All Pro = 1 (Clowney)
Pro Bowl Caliber = 1 (Watkins)
Chance to Become a Pro Bowler = 5 (Robinson, Mack, Matthews, Barr, Mosley)
Should Become and Instant Starter = 16
Chance to Become a Starter = 50
Total Starter Types = 73

Depth By Position (Numbers following position is in order the # in categories 1 thru 5)

WR (11) - 0,1,0,3,7
OT (10) - 0,0,2,1,7
DT (8) - 0,0,0,1,7
CB (7) - 0,0,0,2,5
OLB (6) - 0,0,2,1,3
RB (6) - 0,0,0,1,5
DE (5) - 1,0,0,2,2
QB (5) - 0,0,0,2,3
TE (4) - 0,0,0,1,3
FS (3) - 0,0,0,2,1
ILB (3) - 0,0,1,0,2
OG (3) - 0,0,0,0,3
OC (2) - 0,0,0,0,2

This year's depth matches up well with our needs. We should get some value in PON.

Remember all the talk about this year's QB class? 2 instant starters and 3 potential starters. Big deal.

You never know. Just take it one year at a time.

Here's another look at the depth from ESPN's rankings.

I listed by position, the ranks (1-64) for those with 1st-2nd round talent, a total of those in the first two rounds by position and lastly those with third and fourth round grades by postion'

The numbers indicate the ESPN ranks of those prospects in that position.

WR - 4,7,19,21,23,33,39,49,54,57 = 10 1st-2nd + 10 3rd-4th round grades = 20 1st-4th rounders
CB - 16,20,24,28,29,37,40,55,58,63 = 10 1st-2nd + 7 3rd-4th round grades = 17 1st-4th rounders
OT - 2,5,6,14,15,41,48,50,62 = 9 1st-2nd + 2 3rd-4th = 11 1st-4th rounders
OLB - 3,27,30,35,42,60 = 6th 1st-2nd + 6 3rd-4th = 12 1st-4th rounders
DE - 1, 31, 32, 34, 43 = 5 1st-2nd + 8 3rd-4th = 13 1st-4th rounders
DT - 11,22,25,26,64 = 5 1st-2nd + 8 3rd-4th = 13 1st-4th rounders
QB - 9,13,18,56,61 = 5 1st-2nd + 3 3rd-4th = 8 1st-4th rounders
S - 10,17,45,47 = 4 1st-2nd + 3 3rd-4th = 7 1st-4th rounders
TE - 12.44.51.53 = 4 1st-2nd +1 3rd-4th = 5 1st-4th rounders
RB- 38,52 = 2 1st-2nd + 8 2rd-4th = 10 1st-4th rounders
ILB - 8, 36 = 2 1st-2nd +0 3rd-4th = 2 1st-4th rounders
OG - 46 = 1 1st-2nd + 6 3rd-4th = 7 1st-4th rounders
C - 59 = 1 1st-2nd + 2 3rd-4th = 3 1st-4th rounders
FB, P, K = none

One clarification, 10 of the 13 DE's, 5 of the 13 DT's and 10 of the 12 OLB are projected to be able to play in a 34 defense.

I say are projected, because some are projected to play either but may have a higher ranking as a 43 vs a 34 player.

A guy could be rated 30th as a 43 but 60th as a 34 player, but they are shown here.

Thanks, Mikey! It looks like there's a good chance the Eagles can come away with some help but they'll need to grab a S early if that's what they think they need.

How much of what we're hearing is smoke screen? Lots of chatter about WR but that's where there's the greatest depth. Their pass rusher is a need and there's not as much to offer there.
