So on the D, we get a starting safety and a 4th CB and some special team guy and resign a safety at up to 3M a year whose play has been shaky in his career here.

Extremely disappointing. If Allen signed somewhere else, would we have offered Chung a one year deal?

We really needed better than this to improve this glaring weakness.

Today, Melton signed with Dallas. He would have been a flexible DL option.

And, a starting LT, a starting C, a #3 WR, a #2 WR ...

As the saying goes, watch the doughnut not the hole.

And I forgot, a RB/WR/KR/PR ...

"I think a Darren Sproles only comes around once in your lifetime, in my career and in everybody's career," Brees told FOX Sports and USA Today Sports at the NFL Players Association player rep meetings. "There may be another one 15, 20 years from now. But there's not many guys like Darren Sproles. He's a special player, he's a special person, he's a special teammate. I'm lucky to have had the chance to play with him on two teams -- '05 in San Diego when we drafted him in the (fourth) round and three years in New Orleans."

Z,

Are you REALLY happy with our FA signings?

We had the NFL by the balls.

All the cap room in the world, plenty of free agents out there in positions of need and plenty of needs on D to fill.

We had the resources to be big players this year. Draft picks don't normally offer the quick return that is needed for this year.

I just feel as though they are planning for 2015 season.

Don't they know how fleeting our chance is?

Things happen. You need to prepare every year as if that is the last chance you'll get.

I'm not UNhappy. If it's true that Howie was responsible for the 2012 draft but not 2010 or 2011 ... and considering that Kelly took a miserable, 4 - 12 team to the playoffs after winning the NFC East then I think I should take a deep breath and give them a chance to prove they DON'T know what they're doing.

Your argument is valid but so is the counter that they're putting the RIGHT pieces together and not necessarily the flashy choices. Chung was a disaster but Fletcher, Williams, Barwin, Jones and even Casey were not flashy signings but contributed to the team's success last year. The defense looked like it would be all time horrid in the first half of the season but did fairly well at the end. Allen played better as the year went on and some say Jenkins is a perfect fit for what Davis wants to do. If they add a serious pass rusher they could surprise a lot of people and the offense should be eye popping. If a couple of rookies can contribute the way Johnson, Ertz and Logan did last year they could be contenders.

All I'm saying is this group isn't Andy's gang and so far they've earned my patience.

And, if they had Braman and Maragos last year, maybe they beat N.O. and win a playoff game. Sproles killed us with that last return and now he's going to be a sparkler for the Eagles.

Johnson, Ertz and Logan are typical of the first and second year players from last year who may very well show good improvement this year. With all the changes of the last two years, I fully expect to see significant progress from our last two draft classes.

Howie was responsible for the good (2012-13 drafts), the bad (dream team) and the ugly (2011 draft).

One thing that bears watching is how we get more picks for this year's draft.

So where, exactly, did they fail in FA this year? Ok, many would have loved to sign Byrd but first, we don't know the situation as to whether he wanted to come here or not or if he wanted more than what the Eagles felt he was worth. Jenkins is clearly an upgrade over what we had. We don't need an all pro safety, we just need a decent safety. We'd like an all pro safety though.

Seems we improved on special teams a bit. Always a good thing. Still would like to see a better kicker but a FA signing isn't always needed for a good kicker.

Ok, would like some Dline help. Who was a HUGE name we didn't get? Sure, Ware might have been a nice signing but let's face it, he's no spring chicken and I'm not sure I'd want to spend that kind of money on the guy at this point in his career.

More importantly, the Eagles are more than one or two players away from a SB (realistically). There was no player available who would put us over the top so why waste the money and roster space on someone who isn't (at the end of the day) help you win a SB? I'd rather utilize the draft to find some talent (in a good year like this for the draft) and build a team which will be good for the long haul and get us to a SB eventually.

Also, I haven't read one discussion from the guys who look at this full time and get paid to do so say anything bad about the Eagles and their approach to FA this season. In fact, they've gotten praised as having done the best job out of anyone (or close) this season.

Honestly, I don't know what the complaints are about.

The Eagles have done okay. I think when you add it up, you guys have come out of this offseason with a net gain so far, and when you're the divisions first place team I don't see how anybody could complain about getting better.

Not to mention, with Foles proving himself as a starter, you guys don't have to reach for a QB in the upcoming draft and can focus more on taking best player available.

We had the needs and resources to get three of those listed.
We didn't get it done.
Are we better? Yes. Not as much as we should be.
We got an upgrade at safety, a better 4th cb, and a special teams specialist who I guess is better than the st specialist Phillips we had on IR from last year. Sproles was a great pickup but we could have gotten three plus Sproles.

Obviously, there are always players you don't get for various reasons. Again, without knowing the total situation, it's difficult (at best) to speculate as to why certain players weren't (and were) signed.

Overall, the Eagles have done a very nice job of handling FA this season. I don't want to see them break the bank (again) on FAs just to see us fail miserably like a couple of years ago. Historically, I don't believe teams have fared well when they've taken the approach of building a team through FA.

But again, I don't believe any of those players take us over the top to a SB. Many of them would come in for a season (or two) and be gone. If they aren't helping us get to the SB--and they are only here for a short time--then I don't want them.

As disastrous as the dream team was it didn't do any damage to our cap. We were still able to do what we wanted, that year and future years. We got Mathis out of that push and one CB we got in DRC, was talented enough to earn a big deal this year. It was renegade coaching that did that team in.
