Can we allow custom status? Right now I'm a newbie but is it possible to allow posters to substitute their own choice rather than be ranked by how many posts they've made? Allows for some creativity right there.

I’d be looking at 2-3 forums on the board. I’d like one to be a "Features and Articles" forum for longer posts such as draft profiles (hi Steve!) or history lessons (calling Flying Dutchman) so that the main board can be more immediate. To keep the traffic up on that I’d say that the main forum should be like Igglephans and allow any topic with the obvious exceptions of politics (sorry Charlie!), religion and porngraphy. But happy to split this into a football forum and a general discussion forum if that’s the preference. OK with a troll forum as well.

(Edited because I managed to put the last paragraph in twice)

Sounds good. Right now I have 'Setting up our Forum' seperated, which will eventually turn into a place to talk about our forum politics.

The Trolls forum is currently set so that you don't have to register to post, but whatever name you put in, it puts newbie_ in it. The other forms will be registration only.

To be honest, I sort if like the 'ranks'. Our old forum never really made a clear distinction between Charter Members.

Personally, I was thinking of giving out free T-Shirts to memeber that hit 2000 posts.

I'd like to agree with the request. In that one of the "issues" at the old place was that a particular "offender" posted too much. This sort of "# of posts" dealio rewards spamming and nonsensical posts.

One thing that I think we all appreciated about the old joint, was that it rewarded time served and time served alone. Most of us were "charter members" and even if not, it listed your "member since" date.

I think we may want to consider doing away with the current status and reward system.

That's a Good Point D.

Would you guys object to a vote?

Hadn't thought of it that way. Doubt we can suppress the number of posts but it's a better argument than mine in favour of allowing custom status. Wouldn't want to wait until a certain number of posts is achieved - I'm still struggling towards the magical 1000 level (after six months) on the fish board.

BTW, welcome a-board D Rock IPB Image

No problem with votes on anything (as long as I win tongue.gif ).

What's the point? We are all on equal footing now and who cares what your message board "rank" is. Newbie, Oldie, Stud, whatever... What good is being a higher ranked member anyway? Does it make your posts carry more weight? With regard to names for the ranks, the system defaults are ok with me or admins could create customer names for each level of member, assuming we keep that enabled. Again, I don't really see why this is important - maybe I am missing the point, but it seems to me like a hierarchy was the major problem on the old board. member number or member since date is good enough IMO.

If the consensus is that we should take the post counts and rnaks down, we can do that. Right now, my vote would go for keeping them, but I'm only very slightly leaning in that direction. You guys have almost talked me into getting rid of them.

Lets see what a few others have to say about it before making a decision.

Instead of removing the ranking function, can we allow posters to edit it? So rather than being a "newbie" I change it to "Illegal alien".

D, maybe i did miss your original point. After reading again, I think we are on the same page. I would be in favor of leaving the member # only and removing other stuff. This way, it is some way of knowing how long someone has been around, but doesn't really mean anything more than that.

ok, i am awake now... i see that we could kill everything but the "joined on date" - agreeable by me...

I think your re-read got it Run22. I'm hoping to avoid a hierarchy all together. That said, it is interesting for new guys (a few years down the line) to see who was here first. I think innaugural members should be listed as such.

From my own point of view, I'd be rather embarassed to have my number of posts listed. Imagine how we'd all look if the old board did that. New members would be forced to wonder if any of us had any life at all.

I'm not seeing this as a huge issue in any way, just putting in my humble 2 cents.

The bottom line for me is that I think it could become a problem down the line to have posters wanting to increase their number of posts. Again, my goal is higher post quality over higher post quantity.
