It sounds like some people jumped all over Bill Polian unjustly. He apparently wasn't saying that Foles was worth two #1s and two #2's to another team, he was saying that's what he should be worth to the Eagles. Linc ...

He wrote, "You're getting something if you keep him, you're getting a $7 million insurance policy that's the best insurance policy in football. How did [gathering draft picks] work out in Cleveland? You guys have the trophy."

Comparing the situation in Philly to Cleveland is ridiculous. Philly is a big market and had talent to put around a young QB.

I think Cleveland could be right about the trades they made due to their small market situation. They are going to become a good team very soon, somewhat like the Sixers' rebuild. Probably in 2019--year two for the QB they draft this year.

He does not mention the Eagles' cap situation or Sudfeld who they seem to like.

I wonder if Polian is a friend of Howie or the Eagles and is firing flack for a friend. Polian was one of the Eagles' advisers when looking for a coach.

It's not ridiculous at all. The Eagles have a franchise QB and signed a solid player as backup for insurance. They cashed in on the insurance policy and won big. Cleveland traded away the opportunity to draft that same franchise QB and did it again the following year as a means of accumulating picks and holding down the payroll. How many games did they win with their approach? That's his point.

Saying that, I'm one who thinks it will benefit the Eagles to trade Foles because he's at the high point value-wise and they'll almost certainly lose him next year. The contract is voidable next year most probably at Foles' request.
Plus, the Eagles need cap space. Some team is likely to overpay for him because of how he played in the playoffs. Buy low, sell high. That's how Roseman will most likely look at this.

I'm saying Cleveland would not have won many games with CW. There was not enough around him.

Cle won't be able to pay all of these players once they reach FA. So they'll make a run with a lot of young talent on cheap rookie deals. It is a model for small market teams.

Jax is another small market model. Win with a great D since D players are cheaper than offensive players.

Joe,

You keep mentioning small market.

In the NFL, all teams have the same cap starting point, and because of massive carryforwards and their general suckitude, they can offer more money than almost any other NFL team.

Eventually greenbacks have to go from owner's pocket to player's. In a smaller market, is the TV $ as good as it is in a big market? Are the ticket prices the same? Can players earn as much on the side from advertising spots, attending special events, etc? Does the team need to overpay players to stay in the small market city rather than in sunny LA?
