Ok people, my preliminary offseason game plan.

Apologies for those who hate this stuff, but I have to do something Eagle related.

First statement is overall, we always find a way, and while we have the worst cap situation in the league, Howie will find a way to do some things. But, he will not be able to do everything. We have 53 players and 14 of our own free agents to consider.

How bad is our cap situation?

Pretty bad.

We are 4.9M over the cap, worst in the league, and the team in 31st place has 12M more than us. Yikes!

Our 4.9M over the cap has zero cap alloted for our own free agents. YIKES!

The draft pool of 4.6M is not considered in that with our pittence of a draft pool, we should be able to break even for cap as we will clear enough cap room by cuts to make room for ant draftees that make the team.

However, I think there is a way back to a reasonable cap position.

1st - Foles is off the trading block until at least Wentz proves in training camp that he is 100%. Even with that, my inclination is to not trade him at all. The value of having our season still be alive if Wentz goes down is worth his salary.

Starting point (4.9)

Cap Cuts:
T. Smith + 5.0 -Nice guy but Hollins may even be an upgrade
Celek +4.0 (5.0- 1.0 dead $). Ask him to retire. Give him a coaching job if he wants
Kendricks + 4.4 - (7.6-3.2 dead $). He played half snaps of Hicks and Bradham
Warmack +1.1 ( 1.9-0.8 dead $). He can't play. Every Mill counts
Maragos + 1.5 ( 2.0-0.5 dead$). Good player. Can't afford luxury of having him
Subtotal before FA signing = +11.1M
FA Signings:
Bradham 4.0 ( 3 yrs with year one 4.0 cap hit S/b doable)
Burton 3.0 ( 4 yrscwith a year one cap hit of 3.0 s/b doable)
Sproles 1.4 ( I offerchim Vet Min of 1.0+ 0.4 SB, take it or leave it)
C. Graham 1.4 (same as Sproles)
Ellerbee 0.9 ( vet minimum like he got this year)
Total FA Signings (10.7M)
Net cap room = 0.4M

If need be, we can restructure B. Brooks contract by converting salary to signing bonus and we will pickup at least 4 M of cap. We could also trade or cut Kendricks after June 1st to gain another 1.6 of cap this year.

Thoughts on our other free agents :
Allen - very good backup but can't afford him. Time for Qualls and Vaeao to step up.
Robinson - exc CB but can't afford him. Time for Douglas and Jones to step up.
Blount - appreciate the year but can't afford to keep all RB. Smallwood/Sproles fill in.
Goode, Braman, Barner, Sturgis, Beatty - sorry guys, need to make room
Watkins - as a RFA, we could prob get him for 0.7 M if we choose.

Even with these guys going, we have an excellent team.

As far as the draft goes, we have six picks. With the first three picks (1st,4th,4th) I draft 2 LB and one OG in no specific order. The boards I checked out have 7-8 prospects at these positions within the first 128 picks of the draft. The others let the chips fall where the board takes us. I know we should go BPA at PON, and I assume there will be good prospects there.

No new FA. A dull FA period, but when you have the best roster, that's fine by me.

I like your plan a lot Mike! I think that Clement is a rising star though and will give us more than Sproles can coming off the injury. Also, can we trust Hicks to be able to stay on the field? He couldn't even stay healthy in college. Somehow, someway we have to keep Bradham!

OTC says $6mil in savings if they release Kendricks after Jn 1.

If Foles gets an opportunity he likes, and someone offers fair compensation, the Eagles won't hold onto him. Just get used to the idea that he's gone. If he's traded after Jn 1 that's 6+ mil in savings.

I don't expect Sproles and Ellerby to be back. They may draft a RB in the middle rounds but they also have Smallwood who looked improved before injury and Pumphrey.

Not sure about Graham vs Watkins at S. Will R Douglass learn to also play S in order to get more PT, somewhat like Watkins has. I like Douglass.

You did not mention extensions. Howie is not likely to let most of the following get to free agency a year from now: N Agholor, Hicks, Ajayi, Elliott, Darby. Most of them are better suited for mid season extension due to injury history or strange situations. For example, Will you pay Agholor like a #2 outside WR or above average slot guy? We won't know until he has to play outside to replace T Smith.

If they choose to extend B Graham now, it would give Howie an opportunity to shave a few mil off the 2018 cap and kick the can down the road.
https://overthecap.com/player/brandon-graham/725/

I assume they'll look to add the following in the draft:

at least one LB--maybe their first pick.

A blocking TE to replace Celek. I don't know if anyone on the PS might be ready for that role. I think the Canadian rugby player with size and speed is back on the Summer roster.

An OT to groom as the backup once Peters retires after 2018.

A RB in the middle rounds.

A DT if they have to not resign B Allen, but I expect Allen to return.

I would not be surprised if they trade down to pick up a 2nd and 3rd round pick instead of their low 1st, maybe adding one of their 4ths to the deal.

They seem to have too many mid round picks. I would not be surprised if they try to move up.

You know that the Eagles usually leave much more cap room than that.

Extensions may not be that possible without deeper cuts.

I had the 6.0 for Kendricks, 4.4 up top and the other 1.6 I mention later in the post.

Good idea on the B. Graham extension.

That will free up about 3M.

Our return game was subpar. We need Sproles back in there asap to get us back near the top.

The Eagles tried to sign Burton to a 2 year deal last year and he said no. I think that he wants more than the Birds will offer. They've already brought back Brown from the PS for TC and they liked him. There's a lot of changes coming.

I did not hear that.

My 3.0 cap hit in year one for him is meant to be market value.

He did play 150 less snaps than Celek this year.

I was thinking 4 years and 18M total should do it, with about half in SB. Maybe a year one cash of just below 10M, with a year one cap of 3.0M.

What will make it tricky is if Celek doesn't want to retire.

I think we resign Bradham. Everything other than that is a crapshoot.

I assume they used up most of their cap this year when they extended Jeffery and Tim J. For example, look at this strange cap hit structure.
https://overthecap.com/player/alshon-jeffery/101/

Wasn't Tim J extended after Alshon? This is a more typical "kick the can down the road" approach.

The thought of Mikey Numbers not including any Haucked amount is ridiculous. He's the guy that spotted what Banner was up to all those years ago.

Yes. Not nearly as much as most years.

What really killed us as all the people on IR.

You need to pay those salaries.

3.77M of rollover.
