Ok people, my preliminary offseason game plan.

Apologies for those who hate this stuff, but I have to do something Eagle related.

First statement is overall, we always find a way, and while we have the worst cap situation in the league, Howie will find a way to do some things. But, he will not be able to do everything. We have 53 players and 14 of our own free agents to consider.

How bad is our cap situation?

Pretty bad.

We are 4.9M over the cap, worst in the league, and the team in 31st place has 12M more than us. Yikes!

Our 4.9M over the cap has zero cap alloted for our own free agents. YIKES!

The draft pool of 4.6M is not considered in that with our pittence of a draft pool, we should be able to break even for cap as we will clear enough cap room by cuts to make room for ant draftees that make the team.

However, I think there is a way back to a reasonable cap position.

1st - Foles is off the trading block until at least Wentz proves in training camp that he is 100%. Even with that, my inclination is to not trade him at all. The value of having our season still be alive if Wentz goes down is worth his salary.

Starting point (4.9)

Cap Cuts:
T. Smith + 5.0 -Nice guy but Hollins may even be an upgrade
Celek +4.0 (5.0- 1.0 dead $). Ask him to retire. Give him a coaching job if he wants
Kendricks + 4.4 - (7.6-3.2 dead $). He played half snaps of Hicks and Bradham
Warmack +1.1 ( 1.9-0.8 dead $). He can't play. Every Mill counts
Maragos + 1.5 ( 2.0-0.5 dead$). Good player. Can't afford luxury of having him
Subtotal before FA signing = +11.1M
FA Signings:
Bradham 4.0 ( 3 yrs with year one 4.0 cap hit S/b doable)
Burton 3.0 ( 4 yrscwith a year one cap hit of 3.0 s/b doable)
Sproles 1.4 ( I offerchim Vet Min of 1.0+ 0.4 SB, take it or leave it)
C. Graham 1.4 (same as Sproles)
Ellerbee 0.9 ( vet minimum like he got this year)
Total FA Signings (10.7M)
Net cap room = 0.4M

If need be, we can restructure B. Brooks contract by converting salary to signing bonus and we will pickup at least 4 M of cap. We could also trade or cut Kendricks after June 1st to gain another 1.6 of cap this year.

Thoughts on our other free agents :
Allen - very good backup but can't afford him. Time for Qualls and Vaeao to step up.
Robinson - exc CB but can't afford him. Time for Douglas and Jones to step up.
Blount - appreciate the year but can't afford to keep all RB. Smallwood/Sproles fill in.
Goode, Braman, Barner, Sturgis, Beatty - sorry guys, need to make room
Watkins - as a RFA, we could prob get him for 0.7 M if we choose.

Even with these guys going, we have an excellent team.

As far as the draft goes, we have six picks. With the first three picks (1st,4th,4th) I draft 2 LB and one OG in no specific order. The boards I checked out have 7-8 prospects at these positions within the first 128 picks of the draft. The others let the chips fall where the board takes us. I know we should go BPA at PON, and I assume there will be good prospects there.

No new FA. A dull FA period, but when you have the best roster, that's fine by me.

So we left off at 0.4M of cap space with the moves above. If we do one year extensions for Curry, Brooks and two year extensions with a raise for B. Graham we would have:

Adjusted starting available cap = + 0.4M
One year extension for Brooks =+ 5.7M
One year extension for Curry =+5.5M
Two year extension and raise for Graham =+ 1.3M
Revised Available Cap = +12.9M

Man that's wild. Now all that we have to do is get the agents to go along with it. I'll give them your number! biggrin.gif

So, I go on to SPOTRAC to find that somehow some way, we've manage to spend 1.2M of cap more than a week ago! ohmy.gif

So now we are 6.1M in the red instead of 4.9M!!

Wiz bonus was prob .25M.

I think some of Foles incentives hit for playoff playing time.

Not sure who else.

The road from the red to the black just got a tad longer.

I stand by it. The cap isn't an issue, particularly when you know what you're doing. A smart GM can make it work handily for their team and even win a Superbowl.

All of this cap talk is for the fans and their idle hands.

Here are Burton's comments on the subject:
QUOTE
"I was really disappointed, man, honestly. If I'm going to be transparent, I was really disappointed that there wasn't any offers, it didn't seem like they were even trying. The reality is you can make anything happen if you really want to.

As for Bradham, I am sure the team is trying to figure out how to make it work, or whether they want to make it work. The value that WE place on a player and/or their position may not be the same as the organization does. Considering their most recent (in game) accomplishment, I'll agree with whatever moves they decide works for the team.

Agreed, Phits. It's not about signing everybody we want, it's about signing the best roster available. Otherwise, Wentz would be backing up Aaron Rodgers.

Because they don't value Burton enough to have re-signed him.

Bradham is not signed...yet. Keep in mind, he may still be signed, or not.

I have to laugh...lane Johnson helped out so they could sign Bradham. Celek is gone because of the cap as is Burton. That means we are lean at TE. They may bring Celek back at a reduced rate. Folks get all warm and fuzzy about us signing some aging vets and I think the signings were nice as is the trade but it also means Curry may be next to go. The SB was not proof of no cap issues, rather, as a few of us pointed out, it was the result of putting themselves it a tight cap issue this year. There are no upgrades via the FA market. The DT is not a big upgrade at this stage in his career, it is lateral at best and likely a drop.

Howie got us a SB and maybe he is even improving this team with his latest gambles but anyone who says the cap is not an issue is delusional.

Thank you.

We can replace Celek/Burton with our 5th or 6th round pick, to back up our actual star TE.

The organization has proven they know what they're doing. There's always turnover, and you can't keep everyone.

All of this cap crap is part of the reason that fantasy football is so popular. Anybody that thinks a good GM with experience can't make it work is fooling themselves.
