Eagles Forum _ Philadelphia Eagles or Football Related Discussion _ We're still watching an evolving team

Pederson is surprising me. I thought he was a terrible choice for HC, but he's got this team playing hard every week and winning. It's not a divided team either, the players seem to support each other and help one another. It's really fun watching Wentz become a franchise QB. Can you imagine this team with a stud RB and two CBs named Jones and Darby? That's not meant to disrespect Blount or anyone else either.

We're definitely playing better than expected, particularly given the injured players missing.

They look really good. Going to Carolina on short rest against the hot Panthers will tell us a lot about the team's character, and about Pederson.

Not a fan of Cam the Sham.

Would like to rough him up a bit.

Their D is for real though.

I can't complain about Pedey this week. The offense was clicking. OL still seems to be either REALLY good or REALLY bad. If they get consistently good, this offense can be something special. Wentz is looking like a beast. He's starting to hit that long ball and find a bit of touch as well. He still tends to hold the ball a little too long in certain situations but he's getting better at that. A lot of young QBs tend to do this so it's not a huge concern as he's shown he has been adjusting to what's been thrown at him in his short career. I expect he'll clean this up.

I was super-pleased with the defense. They played FAST yesterday, swarming to the ball. Only 1 missed tackle that I can remember. If the defense can do this, the team can make some noise.

Is it evolving or is is more like developing? Evolution is more of a random process, while development is a managed change, and that is what Pedey did after the KC game. I think seeing big red win it with a more balanced approach to the run/pass ratio woke him up. In the three games since KC the balance shifted from 70/30 to 50/50, and even yesterday, when he passed early and often, it still ended up at 50/50. Seth Joyner, on the post game show, pointed out that when AZ stacked the box with 8 to stop the run, they passed the ball, and when they started dropping safeties into coverage, they ran it.

Then there is Wentz, he has upped his game in one key area that is making all this work...third down. He was one of the worst QBs last year in third down efficiency, ranking like 28th with a 56 QB rating. He may have leaped to first place after yesterday's amazing 3rd down theatrics, for the year his QB rating on third down is 137, yesterday it was 158, he may lead all QBs in the league today on third down efficiency.

That's a good distinction (development vs evolution). In everyday lexicon it's often obscured. But as you pointed out, the processes are distinctly different. bowdown.gif

I'm with you, I can't find much fault with Pedey on Sunday's game. The team was prepared and they did well. I only wish they'd stop this crap about the OL swap. It's not working, just stop already.

That is truly weird. It wasn't completely crazy (I suppose) in 1 or 2 games just to see if the player emerges. But by all accounts, the better player has emerged, so the insistence to continue the experiment seems really odd.

I admit, I go back and forth on this one. My English samsung keyboard is also confused, it can't decide which of the two is correct.

Now the one that is going to make me blow a gasket is Joe's insistence in spelling "lose" with two o's. For fuck's sake, somebody stop that guy from writing loose when he means lose! I'm going to rip my fucking hair out... argh!

Thursday against the Panthers will be a great barometer.

The Eagle's opponents to date have not exactly been world beaters. The Chargers and Giants suck. I am leaning towards putting Arizona in that group too. They beat Washington which was a quality win and hung with KC but it was still a loss. I put Carolina somewhere between Washington and KC at this point. If the Eagles win, it will be their 2nd quality win of the season. If they lose, then I think we will have to consider the fact that the Eagles are good enough to make the playoffs in this year's NFC East but are probably not good enough to go very deep in the playoffs.

At the beginning of the season I did not give the Eagles a chance to make the playoffs. They are in the drivers seat right now. If they can get this win on Thursday night I will be on the playoff bandwagon.

I wouldn't take too much away from this game. Thursday night road games are a total crapshoot. Win or lose, I'm taking this week with a grain of salt. I don't think it will tell us a whole lot about our big picture chances, but a win would definitely position us well for a nice seed in the NFC.

Giving any consideration to the lack of F Cox, L Johnson, R Darby who are expected back soon? Even S. Jones may be added to the DB depth in the latter portion of the season.

We are hitting week 6 and most teams have injuries to deal with. The Eagles are being hit hard right now with Cox and Johnson. I have not seen enough of Darby yet to consider him a huge loss at this point. I know what he did his rookie year and I know what he did last year. That leaves me with not knowing how to grade his loss at this point. Same thing with Jones. He is a rookie and did not even have the benefit of training camp. Anything the Eagles get from him this year is a bonus but I am not counting on anything.

I'm thinking that this will be a loss, which may not be a bad thing as it will calm down expectations and give the coaching staff things to work on during the mini-bye before the key game against Washington. Win that, and we're in pole position for the division with their season almost over.
