Looks pretty good to me now that the games are real

I haven't seen them use him on one stretch play yet

They tried one to the outside. He was tackled in the back field.

Terrible cut, just bad vision on the play. I'm pretty sure I could've picked up almost 10 there.

He just looks slow. Which is pretty much what I expected. But man, you either gotta get through that hole or break that first tackle.

Brutal.

Celek's block leaves a lot to be desired too.

I disagree with nothing you said, but remember this was posted by a douche who desperately wanted to be right about him being cut.

Terrible play by Blount, and Celek's lack of a block left no room for error. If it becomes a trend then I'll worry.

Caplan said last night that it won't be long until Clement is in the mix.

He thought if not this week, then the NYG game would be when Clement sees action.

Caplan is pretty tuned in. I wouldn't be surprised if Clement turned into our feature back at some point this season.

Posted by: Joegrane Sep 14 2017, 09:46 AM

This does not sound like the draft review of a feature back, especially with 4.68 40 speed.
http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/corey-clement?id=2557861

However, if Blount does not produce, Clement could take some reps away in non-short-yardage situations.

I liked that Clement was a willing blocker in blitz pickup situations in preseason. Jaws and Caplin talked about Blount's lack of willingness and effort in such situations, and that is at 250 lbs!

Blount is not going to be a popular player in Philly unless he comes to play on Sunday. Doesn't he realize this is probably his last year in the NFL? Someone ought to pay to have Blount go to lunch with AI so he can learn about Philly

The Eagles did not invest much $ in Blount so if he is only a short-yardage, rotational guy and late 4th quarter hammer, I am fine with that.

I don't expect to see significant reps for Clement in the near future unless there is an injury. I won't be surprised if he gets a few carries just so he'll have some game day experience. RBs get nicked up. You need depth.

I don't know if it would be an earned role or more of something out of necessity. He's a talented guy that didn't have his head on straight. He plays quicker than he does fast/straight line speed.

I'm not saying he's anything special, but he may just be the best back on our roster. If his head is in the game, then maybe he has a chance. The fact that he's showing well on special teams is a good sign with regards to his effort.

Be interesting to know how many snaps he got. Instinct says it was similar to Smallwood, who at least got one carry (albeit with no room) and Sproles probably had half the snaps on his own.

Those are not good numbers for Blount.

At most he was on the field for 5 snaps. Smallwood got significantly more, and completely stunk up the joint.

Posted by: D Rock Sep 17 2017, 05:56 PM

Our run blocking is a joke. To think, morons were claiming it was a potentially best unit in the league. What a joke.

Posted by: nephillymike Sep 17 2017, 06:04 PM

He was pretty calm in his post game interview, although on CSN, they said he left the field earlier than the other players.

Listen, I am probably the most "Run the Damn Ball" guy around.

And I know, the run to pass ratio was whacked.

However, with the holes that the OL was giving, only Sproles is guick enough to get through them. Blount isn't. Smallwood had no holes. Sproles got a good 4.8 yds per attempt, problem is you can't overwork him. We don't have Mathews, McCoy or Westbrook. Except for Sproles, our RB's are just another guy. Seumalo is struggling big time (it's a shame Barbre isn't here to take over and Warmack isn't good enough to be activated), Kelce has no push.

They could give the ball to Blount to massage the critics. Problem is, fat boy ain't getting 4.0 yds per carry to justify the investment. I haven't given up on Smallwood yet and I am hopeful that Clement can be adequate. Pumphrey blows. Maybe if they bench Isaac for Wiz it will be an improvement. It will be an open wound all year.

Am I the only person on earth constantly saying Sproles and Blount need to be on the field at the same time?

At least then nobody knows what is coming. If you're lining up Blount everyone knows it's a run up the gut. And yes, Sproles can't be overworked.

It's pretty ridiculous to write him off after a decent game against the Redskins and virtually no chances today.

That may be worth trying. I don't think you do it too often.

However, if you want to put your best offensive weapons on the field, I think the order is:

Ertz
Jefferey
Sproles
Smith
Agholar
Burton
Blount

We are not good enough to put our 7th best weapon on the field that often.

C'mon man, this is just hater shit. Burton? Agholor, who if not for garbage time wouldn't even have a catch?

He scored 18 fucking td's last year. Ok, so he didn't look great against Washington. He still did decent enough all things considered, and now isn't even on the field. It's insanity to write him off right now.

I have no personal connection to Blount - I felt it was a great signing for cheap, someone who could get those 3rd and shorts. He scored 18 fucking times last year. He isn't Barry Sanders, but to write him off now is sheer lunacy, that's all I'm saying.

I see your point. I was hopeful too. Going by what I've seen in the preseason and the few carries in the games and what every writer has sai about the practices, I am not confident in his ability. Then Caplan mentions the weight, and the lack of effort in pass protection, and I lose patience. Given the ineffectiveness of Smallwood, they can give him a shot if they want. But Smallwood had a good preseason game and good reviews in training camp. As quick as Sproles had to be for the 4.8 average yesterday, realistically, I don't think Blount is nearly as effective. If your point is give him the three carries Smallwood had, then I guess. We just don't have the luxury of wasted plays.

The lack of extra poundage helps. The fact that the has never been a featured back (and had 100 carries in a season) also adds life to those legs.

He's a freak.

No, they thought he was worth bringing back, which is why they made him an offer. He wanted more, and they held firm, as the Pats are known to do. Unless you're Tom Brady, you ain't playing hard ball with Belichick. Now he gets to sit on the bench and watch us throw all day, and hear about how much he sucks, instead of scoring touchdowns and picking up short yardage from a coach that knows how to use him.

I just have to laugh at this shit. Eagles fans really deserve our reputation sometimes. Guy has a monster year, gets signed, has a below average first game, gets almost no playing time the second.....HE'S FINISHED LOL.

QUOTE
After two months of free agency, the Patriots have offered starting tailback LeGarrette Blount a contract. However, with seven other backs currently on the roster, the tender may be more shrewd strategy than earnest declaration of interest.

New England offered Blount a one-year, $1.1 million contract Tuesday, but the deal appears more like a ploy to recoup a compensatory draft pick should a rival franchise show interest down the road. If another team offers the bruising back a deal, the Patriots will have the option to either match those new terms or receive a compensatory pick in return.

No. They didn't want him back. That is made clear in the article (and every article about the subject) and the fact that they had 7 RBs on their roster when they made the offer.

You think they signed a restricted free agent (Gillislee) only to have him share goal line carries with Blount? I sure hope you're not as ugly as you are stupid.

The article is speculation, which is *gasp* what average sportswriters do. The fact is, he was given an offer at a price they were willing to pay, and he was offered more by someone else. They didn't match it. You're just running with this because you're upset at always being proven wrong about running the ball, and desperate to grasp at any straw you can.

He should've had 20 carries by the end of the 3rd quarter. You could tell early he was wearing down the Giants D. Granted, Smallwood looked slightly less like a waste of a roster spot today, but he doesn't scare anyone. Nobody wants to tackle Blount, and he was gone for long stretches of the game. No doubt that was a factor in letting the Giants creep back into it.

Clement looks to have some real potential. I know Smallwood ended up with a good statistical day, but I don't think there's any excuse for the amount of touches he got, considering Blount was smashing the Giants and then would disappear for a couple series. If Sproles didn't get dinged up I'm not sure Blount would've even gotten 12 carries.

You saw in the 2nd half goal line mess what happens when you run Blount "every other play". Remember it was Smallwood who finally punched it in--after LA helped with at least one dumb penalty. Smallwood is also a threat to run wide and in the passing game.

You have to keep defenses off balance.

Remember also that the Chargers have a poor run defense. The Eagles may not have similar success again this season.

He just played to the Cruds weakness, built the lead by shreddiong them with the pass and then pounding the clock later in the game. Absolutely no complaints about today's gameplan, 3 straight TDs to open the game was a thing of beauty.

Maybe he only gave Blount 2 touches in the first half to keep fresh for the 2nd half. Blount doesn't strike me as a high endurance guy.

Maybe Pederson is a lot smarter than people think.

Mini Stoke, BS. I would have sent Blount to go clean the toilets after he whiffed on the blitz pickup that caused CW to overthrow a wide open receiver! All he needed to do was to slow down the blitzer for a second and he failed. I think that was his second whiff of the half! Play the rookie who is willing to take on a blitzing LB!!!

Forget about Blount getting a majority of the carries. He has not deserved that role due to his poor blitz pickup effort. He has his role and it is an important, though limited one.

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but you said the same thing over a month ago and obviously it isn't that big a concern, considering his 2nd half role. Don't worry, I'll continue to bump this thread every time he has a kickass game.

Forget what, the game I just watched, where he had the majority of the carries among RB's, and was used properly in the 2nd half? Are you watching the same game?

I'm referring to the carries for the entire season. If Smallwood is reasonably healthy, he'll earn more carries than Blount because Blount does stupid things like whiff twice in one half on blitz pickups. It is absolutely amazing that a veteran 250lb RB is so awful at blitz pickup. BWest and Sproles were much more effective.

I also think that the coaches know he had a heavy load last season and want to limit him early so he is still fresh when we need a big pounding back in those cold weather games toward the end of the season.

I have to not just disagree but disagree vigorously. How you can watch Blount the last 3 weeks and not be happy blows my mind. First, lets address the blitz pickup. You are wrong about whiffing on it twice in one half, in the first half he stepped right to pick up the tackle who had a step into the hole and then saw Dansby and slowed him down with an arm. It was a mistake but it was the only blitz he had to pick up the entire half.(and yes, I watched very down he played) In the 2nd half he picked up Honeybadger, though somewhat deep, and Wentz rolled to the wrong side and Blount held Matthieu to keep him from the sack. Again, not a whiff. Comparing Blount to Westbrook or Sproles is silly, no shit they were better and they were very different players. Blount is a hammer and now a very productive one. How anyone can even think to compare him to those 2 is a real head scratcher. As far as blitz pickup, both very much quicker and shorter so they could effectively get to the blitz and get under the pads.(for Sproles, he started under their pads).

Yeah, in case you were wondering, I'm going to keep bumping this thread.....until a certain member of this board admits he was wrong about Blount. I won't say who this person is, but I'll give you a hint:

Still pisses me off that a man of his size won't take on blitzing LBs. That cost them a completion again this week.

Doesn't he realize he'd be on the field much more often if he could be trusted to throw his weight around in blitz pickup.

Speaking of beating the blitz, what a nice TD by Agholor on that slant. It is so great to see him flourishing. I wonder what will happen next year. Will they have the cap $ to keep T Smith considering all of the FAs who will need to be paid. Will they choose to rely on Hollins, Agholor and Gibson.

You aren't the ignoramus I'm referring to, only because you aren't worth the time to keep track of.
